Create one comparison sheet
Use a column for each proposal and keep the original documents. This worksheet is a set of questions to discuss with contractors, not a technical rating of their work. Leave unanswered entries visible rather than assuming they are included.
Equipment and suitability
Record complete equipment model numbers, proposed capacity and listed efficiency ratings. Ask how the system was sized for your home and what existing components would remain. ENERGY STAR advises a home evaluation and written, itemized estimates.
Installation and exclusions
Our suggested comparison rows: removal, equipment installation, duct changes, electrical work, controls, approvals, startup checks and cleanup. Ask who is responsible for each item and how unexpected work would be priced. A short proposal can hide important unanswered questions.
Price, payment and warranty
Record the total quoted scope, payment schedule, equipment warranty and labor warranty separately. Ask what is excluded and who handles a warranty claim. Compare the same work before choosing on price. Verify contractor details through Virginia DPOR’s license lookup.
Keep the decision with you
Ask the contractor to explain any item you do not understand. This site does not select a contractor for you, validate a quote or guarantee work. You can send a non-urgent inquiry for owner review, without authorizing contractor outreach.
